LSA student named a finalist for the Test of Time Awards

Thomas Massey, South Turbine Hall - Day and Night or Weekday and Weekend

Thomas Massey, a recent graduate of the London School of Architecture, has been announced as a finalist for The Student Prize at the 2026 Test of Time Awards for his project ‘Site of Transmission’.

This project re-explores the 1960s landscape manifesto of Brenda Colvin and Sylvia Crowe, Industry and Landscape, which conceived industrial infrastructure not merely as functional, but as a permanent civic amenity. While many such monuments have been lost to demolition, this intervention focuses on Greenwich Power Station, one of London’s last intact historic stations, to investigate how industrial production and civic life can dynamically coexist across an entire urban site.

Positioned adjacent to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the station operates as a critical lens to contest conventional, static ideas of heritage. Rather than freezing historic architecture in time, the project treats the entire site as a living, evolving landscape where heavy industry actively informs public infrastructure.

Drawing on the local maritime lineage, the station is re-imagined as a civic commons structured around a shipbuilding apprenticeship programme. This core vocation drives a curriculum split into three foundational pillars: Conservation, Replication, and Experimentation.

On-site workshops support training, repair, and vessel construction, adapting historic maritime crafts into bespoke timber components for contemporary building projects across London. Rather than isolating these industrial operations, the site’s spatial programming allows civic life and production to interface constantly. When active fabrication pauses, the industrial volumes seamlessly adapt, opening to host community markets, art exhibitions, and public events. Through this integrated architectural ecosystem, the project moves beyond preservation, transforming what was once a closed-off fortress into an adaptable, working monument that embeds industry directly back into the civic realm.

Architecture Today’s Test of Time Awards represent a cultural shift away from celebrating newness and towards a focus on longevity. In contrast to most awards programmes, they assess buildings that have been in use for several years and can demonstrate a strong track record in delivering on their environmental, functional, community and cultural ambitions.

The finalists will present their projects to the jury at the Live Finals on 9 September 2026.
