LSA Tuesday Talks
Meet students, faculty and alumni at our Open Evening — 24.02.2022
Harriet Stride — The School with Roots
Graduation year — 2022
Email — harriet.stride@the-LSA.org
Tutors — Jesper Henriksson & Akari Takebayashi
Location — St Monica’s Primary School, Hoxton, Hackney
Size — 6,715sqm
Objective —
‘Rewild’ the urban experience of childhood, reintroducing children to the outside world.
Motivation —
Nature deficiency is harming children’s mental and physical health across the UK, and detaching them from their freedom, imagination and ecological connection.
Strategy —
Condense the spatial experience of nature to form a new school typology, providing the same adventurous and therapeutic sensations in an everyday urban setting. Architecturally determined spaces will prompt undetermined, playful activity to enrich the National Curriculum, entangling play and learning as a one continuous condition of childhood.
Impact —
Re-establish children’s right to play and be wild within the city, nurturing a resilient, independently-minded and ecologically-connected generation to grow up facing the climate crisis.
