Cities Leader Lara Kinneir guided First Years on a Hackney Hike on their first day at the LSA.
In 2018 the LSA headed East from the confines of Somerset House to its new studio in Hackney. Since then we have settled into the sometimes weird, often wonderful, surroundings of Mare Street and London Fields, surrounded by a diverse array of artists, architects, designers and creative studios.
Though we have a studio base, our school treats the city as its campus with lectures and events taking place across London through the help of our extensive Partner Network. Being in Hackney however, allows the LSA to plug-in to our more immediate surroundings which is rich with creative talent — Hackney boasts 861 designers and photographers, 745 artists and 645 architects. Our studio is subsequently able to not only reach out but also attract this community who attend Design Reviews, workshops and LSA events such as the End of Year Show.

Here After, the 2019 LSA end of year show.
The LSA is also committed to improving its outreach to the wider community. As part of this programme, Second Years last year worked with local school, the Mossbourne Community Academy and Swedish practice White Arkitekter to host two workshops entitled ‘Places for Girls’. Places for Girls focused on empowering girls — in this case, twelve students aged 12-13 — to be more involved in the design and planning of their local area. Read more about the workshop here.

Karakusevic Carson Architects and David Chipperfield Architects gave the LSA a tour of the Hoxton Press towers and Colville estate Shoreditch.

All LSA cohorts enjoy a graduation lunch at Bistroteque, just off Mare St in Hackney.
