Eyes on Design

The first Show + Tell Socials of 2018 will look at design from three different vantage points. Private Eye, on Monday 29 January, presents architects speaking about their designs for private houses with a response from a critic from a different design background. Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu will discuss the practice’s recently completed Sun Rain Rooms in London, while James Macdonald Wright will present Caring Wood in Kent, for which he (and Niall Maxwell) won RIBA House of the Year 2017. Focusing on a single project, each speaker will give an insight into the development of ideas and the criteria by which they judge good design. Design producer Brent Dzekciorius will join the discussion to bring an alternative perspective.

Speaker biographies

Anna Liu

Anna is co-founder and Director of Tonkin Liu with Mike Tonkin. She was educated at Columbia University in New York, and qualified as an architect in the UK. Teaching has always been a vehicle for exploration for Tonkin Liu, and their research has explored patterns of construction in nature and patterns of behaviour in human nature. She has taught at London Metropolitan, the AA, and Westminster and is currently an External Examiner at the Bartlett.  Projects include award-winning urban regeneration schemes, buildings, landscape, and artwork. Tonkin Liu’s Sun Rain Rooms was completed in 2017, has won an RIBA Award, and is shortlisted for the 2018 Don’t Move, Improve award. Tonkin Liu is a member of the LSA Practice Network.

James Macdonald Wright

James’s experience covers architecture in a range of sectors including residential, education and the arts. After qualifying at the Bartlett School of Architecture in 1999 and becoming an Associate with a multidisciplinary London practice, he founded Macdonald Wright Architects in 2005. The East London practice is best known for sensitively marrying high sustainability with cutting-edge design, while taking inspiration from regional vernacular forms and materials. In 2017 his design for Caring Wood in Kent (with Niall Maxwell) won RIBA House of the Year.

Brent Dzekciorius

Brent is a design producer and curator, based in London. He is Director of Dzek, a design manufacturing company he founded in 2013 to create original architectural materials and products in collaboration with designers. Brent is interested in creating work that combines a craft sensibility with optimism about the potential of industrial manufacturing. Previously he was Head of Retail Operations at Phillips and Director of Moss in New York.
