James set up his architectural practice, Project Orange, with his partner Christopher Ash in 1997. They work globally, mainly on residential and hotel projects. A seasoned tutor, James’s involvement in education has been furthered through his work with the RIBA Education Department, from 2000-2015 as a chair of Validation Visiting Boards, the chair of the RIBA New Courses Committee and vice chair of the Education Committee.
Committed to being a research practice, Project Orange has published two collections of essays, PO Box, the first of which was shortlisted for the RIBA President’s Medals for Research in Practice. James has given a number of papers on intuitive design including: Theory by Design (2012); Research in Practice, Theory by Design Conference, Antwerp; and Education in Practice, Living and Learning AAE Conference, Sheffield (2014). He is currently co-editing and writing for A gendered Profession, to be published October 2016.
