Festival of the Future
On Saturday 15 March, The London School of Architecture (LSA) hosted two workshops for 13 – 16 year olds at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), as part of the Festival of the Future.
Participants were challenged to design and build furniture at 1:1 scale that could support their weight, using recycled materials.
The workshop was designed to encourage students to engage with designing to scale and using material responsibly – an important aspect of being a designer in the context of the climate and ecological crises – and encouraged team-working and public speaking skills.
These themes align with the core learning objectives of the LSA’s Part 0 campaign and it was an absolute pleasure to bring this approach of working with young people to the Festival.
This workshop was orchestrated and run by The LSA’s Part 0 leaders Roy Coupland and Ya Ya Chen.
The Festival of the Future is a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to showcase the diverse pathways into careers within the built environment. By engaging young people, children, and adults from London and beyond, the festival delivered creative workshops, educational talks, and hands-on experiences for participants aged 0 to 25.
A huge thank you to event producers Beyond the Box and RIBA for inviting us to participate!
Sponsors who made the festival possible: Supported by the Mayor of London, Ealing Council, Heatherwick Studios, Woodsbagot, Vandersanden, Camden Council, AHMM, RIBA, Beyond the Box, London Southbank University and Ravensbourne University.
