What is it?
A professional development course designed and delivered by The London School of Architecture for architects and built environment professionals seeking to demonstrate competence in fire safety, health, and life safety under post-Grenfell legislation.
Why take part?
The Grenfell Tower Fire prompted significant change in UK statute, introducing a new building control regime, new duty holders, and new competency frameworks. Beyond introducing statue, this course is unique in exploring how fire and life-safety concerns intersect with design, commercial, and ethical practice, through expert talks, peer-to-peer discussion, and live-project workshops.
Who is it for?
This course will assist participants in meeting and exceeding all core competences in fire-health and life-safety design, giving them confidence to take on the Principal Designer role under the Building Safety Act. It is aimed at anyone who undertakes designer’s duties in the built environment. It will be relevant to architects in practice, architectural students, and other built environment professionals and clients. Structured through current UK statute and standards, this course is nonetheless relevant to a global audience interested in learning lessons from the UK.
Who delivers the course?
The course is delivered by leading figures who have helped shape the post-Grenfell regulatory environment. Course contributors include former presidents of the RIBA, award winning researchers and investigative journalists, contractors, certifiers, legal experts, and insurance representatives, as well as technical leads in small and large practices.
What are participants saying?
“Fantastic course, more people should attend…it helps you to question what you are designing as well as your competency. A valuable insight into the latest fire safety regulations, from a philosophical and historical context, to fire legislation, to current discussions with leading experts on topics heavily centred around Grenfell and the resulting Building Safety Act.” Rizwana Osman, Senior Architect, and Sean Bignold, Architectural Director, Ryder Architecture
Boarding week: 6 February 2026
Live workshops: six Fridays from 13 February – 27 March 2026
